1/18 Autocross Practice

A nice variety of vehicles showed for the first practice of the season.

Foreground: the first Viper I have ever seen run at autocross, suprisingly, it was driven well
Background: A formula-something-or-other

The venerable Elise

The Ariel Atom, apparently named such because "spin cycle" was a registered trademark of the Maytag Corporation.

Lots of tire on this F-Body

A fellow Silvia, with much better paint

U.S. Rally driver Matt Sanders showed up to practice, making for a good battle between well-matched STis with Ian.

Both cars were running the stock RE-070 tire making for a good comparison. In the end, 2/10th separated their best laps.

Since the AWD launch fails to produce tire smoke, Matt settled for copious clutch smoke

The Evo alternately lifting a tire and lifting a cone

One highlight was meeting Jason Rhoades, a San Diego Region hero renown in the Silvia community for taking the national STS title in an S13. Jason gave me a ride in his Viper, explaining that the Dodge is "just like a big 240". If my little to 240 is a lot of fun, then you do the math...

Jason muscles the 'big 240' through the finish slalom, claiming a cone on the way.
